Ready to explore the Catlins? Let’s dive into the top spots you won’t want to miss on your next adventure!
1. Mclean Falls
Travel: 20min walk from the carpark
Mclean Falls is definitely an Acorn favourite waterfall in the South Island, New Zealand. If you’re game enough (and safe enough) there is a wee rock climb that will take you to new heights and let you see the waterfall at a totally different perspective. The walk from the carpark to the final destination of the Mclean Falls has so many opportunities to stop and explore other small falls and nature spots that you should definitely take advantage of when exploring this location.

2. Purakanui Falls
Travel: 10min walk from the carpark
One of the more well known spots in the Catlins. Once you reach the waterfall you might find swapping your shoes out for a pair of bare feet might be the best way to go when exploring the Purakaunui falls to the fullest.

3. Purakanui Bay
Travel: Pull right up to the location and you choose how much you feel like walking on the day.
Most often you’ll find some campers that have chosen this spot as a home for the night and who wouldn’t? A dusty gravel road out to the bay but a perfect one for road tripping on.

4. Tautuku Beach
Travel: Park right on the beach!
Pull right up to the beach, check for low tide beforehand and remember the Catlins are known for rogue waves. Every seven waves you need to keep an eye out for those bigger waves that might just take you by surprise or completely soak you! We totally recommend this spot for a perfect beautiful sunrise walk!

5. Florence Hill Lookout
Travel: Take 2 steps out of your car… yup it’s really that easy!
A sunset goes off at Florence Hill and sets the mood for a romantic evening. If you are travelling with a companion you quite like, then time this one perfectly and you’ll get results! Note we live in New Zealand and the weather does like to play four seasons in one day so that is one thing out of our control so maybe check the weather beforehand you explore the Catlins.
6. Nugget Point
Travel: 10min walk from the carpark to the located view safe zone spot recommended… but the world is your oyster so if you walk to get some a little different or unique angles it may require a little cliff climbing. Check out at your own discretion/Risk.
Disclaimer: Acorn does not recommend you explore these locations in an unsafe manner. The Catlins are beautiful if you view them from the recommended paths or off the beaten track. How you explore is done at your own risk. Also be a tidy kiwi and keep the Catlin’s beautiful by only leaving behind footprints. Happy exploring!
